About Physician Assistants…
Physician Assistants (PAs) are medical professionals trained, certified, and licensed to practice medicine with supervision of a physician. The Physician Assistants at Orthopedic Surgery, P.C. are valuable members of the team who will examine, evaluate, diagnose and treat the varied orthopedic problems that our patients have. They also order tests, write prescriptions, assist in surgery, and participate in your pre- and post-operative care.
PAs are educated in the medical model designed to compliment physician training and have participated in rigorous clinical rotations through programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) www.arc-pa.org. They must complete a national certification examination in order to practice and are required to participate in 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years. In addition, they must pass a re-credentialing examination every six years.
Physician Assistants should not be confused with medical assistants, who perform administrative and simple clinical tasks with limited post-secondary education. The Physician Assistant enjoys an autonomous and collegial relationship within the Physician-PA team and acts as an extension of the services provided by the MDs at Orthopedic Surgery, P.C. For more information about the Physician Assistant profession, please visit the Association of Physician Assistants website aapa.org.
